Anglo-saxon news dump

H-13

Straight in with one of two articles from the Observer/Guardian about Afghanistan.

Todays Observer Comment argues that western governments need to be honest about what needs to be done and what is at stake. Notably that more than the current 3 300 troops will need to be commited to cover an area 4 times the size of Wales.

This echoes a piece from yesterdays Guardian interview with Des Browne in which he says that the Ü.K presence has given a boost to the Taliban ... this now means that the job overthere is three fold for the soldiers: winning hearts & minds, stopping the Taliban from becoming more dominant and not allowing Al-Qaida to gain a toe hold..... butbutbut at the very start of all this weren't we told .....

A quick whizz over to the Times where we learn that officers in the Ü.S marine corps were guilty of 'dereliction of duty'. The second highest ranking officer in Iraq, Peter Chiarelli ...'has accused the marine officers of turning a blind eye to inconsistencies and inaccuracies in initial reports of the deaths. Twenty-four Iraqis, including women, children and an elderly man in a wheelchair, died in the incident last November'.

Still in the Times, the west is apparently already engaged in a 'secret war' with North Korea and Iran which has so far involved interceptions of North Korean ships at sea, US agents prowling the waterfronts in Taiwan, multinational naval and air surveillance missions out of Singapore, investigators poring over the books of dubious banks in the former Portuguese colony of Macau and a fleet of planes and ships eavesdropping on the “hermit kingdom” in the waters north of Japan.

Back home to John Prescott and his growing taste for freebies from wealthy and well placed people .. cronyism, anyone ?
