French news dump

H -10.30

Without any further ado, a quick dive into Libération.

The most important article of the day, one that just kinda popped out and struck me fairly and squarely between the wotsits .. euhhmm eyes : Au bord de l'orgasme !!!

Yup, the makers of Viagra are coming up with a new pill for the ladies.

Proctor & Gamble are already a few lengths in front of Pfizer who tried, unsucessfully, to test viagra on women back in 2004.

Although many avenues are being explored, melanocortine and ocytocine seem to be the ideal molecules - roll out expected for the end of 2006.

Also from the Libé, a french blogger is in court this week. His 'crime' is keeping a blog about how useless and stupid the city hall is in Puteaux (a small town just on the edge of western Paris).

The Mayor has taken umbrige ... he's got the 'ump, like ... to photos showing 100 year old trees being cut down, frences and railings being but up accross public pathways .. the list goes on.

Anyhow, the mayor took the guy to court after blokey blogger had cut and pasted extracts, plus his own comments, from a local news paper. The mayor, charitably, accuses him of plagiarism ... too bad that the guy's also a journalist ... the judge threw it out of court. Full story here

One of the few very good political investigation T.V magazines here is called "Special envoy". We learn this morning that one of their helpers, Annakurban Amanklytchev, has been arrested and tortured in Turkmenistan... isn't this the place where the president likes his prisoners boiled in cauldrons and which Toerag Bliar says is a beacon of democray..

He's been accused of spying for a foreign country.

This comes hot on the heels of the arrest, three weeks ago of Ogoulsapar Mouradova (from Radio free), his three children and two other human rights activists.

There are quite a few articles this morning about the alliance of Renault & Nissan to buy out General motors. I reckon the north american market might very well be inundated with the new Megane - no-one i know here would touch it with a barge pole.

On the political front, everyones favorite villain ... boo hiss boo .. Sarko has claimed "I am not Mrs Thatcher or Ronald Reagan" after he was accused of laissez faireisme by his mentor Edouard"je vous demande de vous arrêter"Balladur.

All of this because Sarko ... boo hiss boo .. proclaimed last week that he wanted to create "popular liberalism" as opposed to "capitalism without rules or ethics".

"I want to create a political synthesis which will reconcile economique efficiency, social justice, authority and liberty, attachment to France and openess on Europe"

Foochâbol :

A very good article here about the younger generations from immigrant famillies for whom the french team represents an idealised model of integration and acceptance.

However, as one of the guys interviewed points out : "Nous les immigrés, on est français quand on gagne le Mondial. Mais 15 jours après, on n'est plus français : Chirac, Sarko et tous les autres nous oublient" .. "us immigrants, are french when we win the cup. But 15 days later, we aren't any more: Chirac, Sarko ant all the others forget about us" ...

One youngster says that he will buy the official strip at the end of the competition and wear it 'over there' (in Morroco).

All of this to emphasise the difficult cohabitation of identities : the one in the 'quartier'- the daily, concrete one, with it's very strong sense of solidarity, but also the desire, not always admitted to in public, to go and live somewhere else; and the french identity, which makes them all cry and cheer with joy each time a goal is scored but which dissipates almost as quickly.

As one youngster sums it up : "Cette équipe, c'est le tiers-monde, avec plein de Noirs et d'Arabes. Comme nous ! Et ils gagnent contre tous les autres" .. "that team, it's the third world, with loads of blacks and arabs. Like Us ! And they win against all the others" ..

No mention here by me, you notice, of the sweeping Zizou mania gripping the country ... not to be confused with 'Zizi' * mania which means something altogether different ..

Well o.k then, just a few titles to give you a flavour of things : Vénération Zidane, Zidane, le génie retrouvé, Icone malgré lui, Zidane, la touche finale

As for the fabulous destiny of Amélie, i just had to get it in somewhere, somehow :-) ... i've only seen a few articles about her win yesterday :Amélie double la mise, Wimbledon: Amélie Mauresmo remporte le titre
