News dump

A quick whizz through the brit press leaves me with the usual feeling of "plus ça change" : lots of articles bemoaning the Bliar presidency.

So today is a bit of a Tony Blair Special :

Are we finally approaching the "In the name of god, go" moment ? The Indy seems to think so :

"Demands for Tony Blair to quit over his support for US President George W Bush in the Middle East are to be taken to Labour's annual conference next month in a direct challenge to his leadership by left-wing Labour campaigners.

An emergency resolution will be sent to all constituency Labour parties calling for Mr Blair to quit because of his "disgraceful" policy in Iraq, and for a leadership election within two months of the conference."

Over at the Observer where Andrew Rawnsley also suggests that Blair really should make his mind up before the Party conference starts and so take the wind out of the plotters sails :

"There is a second, significant development. Most of the key people around Mr Blair are coming to the view that he must say something soon. Many more weeks of debilitating speculation about his intentions will be bad for the government and worse for him.

It has been universally assumed that the party conference would be the moment.

But close allies of Mr Blair now believe that will be too late.

To leave speculation to rage until the conference will mean that the whole of the politically critical month of September will be dominated by the subject of his departure date to the exclusion of everything else..."

Still in the Observer, Menzies Cambell attacks the supine prime minister for his unflinching support of the fruitloop Bush administration and reinforces the message that the uk foreign policy is just plain wrong. Moreover :

"Axis of evil' and 'an arc of extremism' are lazy descriptions of complex problems, as if you can solve them more easily by describing them more simply, as if a soundbite description will allow a soundbite solution...

...The government's endorsement of the United States position has yet again done us terrible damage in Europe, the Middle East and throughout the world.

Who would have thought that a senior UN official would want to discourage the Prime Minister from active participation in diplomatic efforts because he was compromised by the UK's position?

Who would have thought that on this occasion, Kofi Annan, on whose behalf Jack Straw intervened not that long ago when he was under severe pressure from the Bush administration, would not get unequivocal British support?

Margaret Beckett's discomfort was both palpable and understandable..."

Another set back for the Iron ladys spiritual son, comes with Ehud Olmerts refusal to restart talks about that tatty piece of paper that used to be called the road map : 'Not now. After this difficult war, Israelis are simply not ready for new talks with the Palestinians.' .. so no high profile middle east shindig any time soon then.

Whilst he's been sunning himself in the West Indies, another little leak -where are the polish plumbers when you need 'em ? - has started to trickle out : Unions warn that cash shortages will cost lives as MoD memo orders freezes on manpower and kit

That's not all - Blair 'feels betrayed by Bush on Lebanon' :

"..A senior Downing Street source said that, privately, Mr Blair broadly agrees with John Prescott, who said Mr Bush's record on the issue was 'crap'..."
