Spring bank holiday
French split over former holiday
French workers are divided over whether to stay at home on what used to be the Pentecost public holiday.
About 50% - mainly state employees - stayed at home on Monday, despite the fact that the government scrapped the holiday in 2004.
France cancelled the day off to help fund healthcare for the elderly and disabled people, following the deaths of 15,000 in a heatwave in 2003.
The government said the extra day was needed to help fund social programmes....
Today was crap .... there, i've said it ... it's off my chest.
I don't w.o.r.k in the public sector, i could have taken the day off too; but it would have been taken off my holiday quota.
The trains were running a sunday service - so i didn't get in until gone 10am ... every one i phoned today was off, i didn't advance with anything, the Champs Elysées was awash with tourists, very noisy and no where to sit down to eat ... crap *x 2*
I left work at about 6pm and got home just before 8pm ... crap *x 10*
I've had a shower, eaten, just watched what amounts to "Gardeners acadamy"on t.v (don't ask, i'll explain that one another time) and in 7 1/2 hours time i've gotta get up and do it all again ....crap *squared*
I think this whole semi-bank holiday thing is the biggest load of old tosh since ... pfffft ... i dunno ... since ... for all time ...
The old wrinklies died (sad) but they saved the govmint lit shoads of money in the retirement kitty (way cool, problem solved) ... i'd've been a good spin doctor, methinks.
There's no need for a day of solidarity to show .. what ? .. atonement for people who were practically dust already ? .. we already have a holiday for that one; it's called Haloween ...
As he shuffles off, head tucked into his shoulders, grumbling and mumbling incoherently into the distance..

Now there we see a crucial diferrence between the French and the Germans. A public holiday was cancelled in Germany too Bußundbettag in October to pay for the same sort of stuff but the GERMANS now all go to work on that day!
And the English - what would we do??
It's terrible, but this kind of thing really confirms the image that we have of the french - a nation of moany old moaners.
We'll have to wait and see if Bliar and his toadies try to cancel the may day bank holiday ... but i suspect that it would happen to the general indifference of every one.
