French news dump

Plus ça va ...

For the fourth week running, l'affaire Clearstream maintains its grip on the mainstream press - go here for a résumé of the story - this week there have been two developements :

Jean-Louis Gregorin has admitted to sending two anonymous letters to Judge Van Ruymbeke, this after having been in a meeting with De Villepin who wanted to conduct a secret investigation without Sarkozy knowing about it.

Meanwhile, in Paris last night, two policemen provoked a false alert as to the arrest of general Rondot - they were seen in his appartment building talking to the concierge, making notes on entry and exit points, interphone numbers etc.

General Rondot, who has so far refused to cooperate with judges, had even been saying this week that the police would have to take him by force ... you should be careful what you wish for, methinks ...

The only other story this week has been the Cannes film festival and that film with Hom Stank in it ... or at least that should be his new screen name if we believe the film critics' view of it.

The public reaction seeems to be the same here as elsewhere: those who loved the book, bought the tee-shirt and collectors mug; loved the film with its faithful adaptation to the screen, whilst those who have never read the book (like me) and wanted to see the film (not like me) came out saying it was too long and confusing.

There have also been the boycots from christian groups - yup, we have them too in France - and debates about whether or not it's blasphemous to even hold the idea that J.C and Mary.M got married *gasp* and had ... wait for it ... little'uns *the horror* ... if this is true, then where are his (not their) descendants people are asking.
