Montparnasse

Time flys

A very stressful week has come to an end ... stressful in the sense that i've been out on visits (swanning around really) for about 75% of the time ... when i get back i have to dodge people, type up reports, do financial proposals and eventually do billing.

I used to be much happier 'in' than 'out' but things are different now that the weather is starting to be a bit warmer.

It's also much nicer and relaxing to be able to go out and make an effort to try and really visit the quartiers that i have to go to ... i never really used to bother, but i've kinda really become aware of how little i know about Paris - other than the area that i work in.

So, two days in Montparnasse = a lot of photos taken in odd moments ...

Montparnasse is another 'hub' as it is a main commuter station with lots of train and métro connections - it's central, you can come in from the suburbs (i could come through here to go to work if i wanted to), three or four major subway lines go through here and you can also take a direct line on to the airport (20 minutes or so).

It's verrrrry busy with people going about their business doing their thing ... going abroad, coming home, drug smuggling ... what have you.

The Tour Montparnasse is 56 floors high and provides an excellent vantage point : a 360° panorama of the whole city ... my clients where 'only' on the 16th floor and i asked 'what do i have to do to go to the top floor to have a look ?' - 'You pay 8.50 euros, take the lift to the top floor and voila' .... i've never been there before and the chances are i'll never go again - i'm not a tourist, after all ;-)

So, showing no shame and knowing no pity (merci les 'jungle brothers') here's a few photos :

Starting from the west.

The Montparnasse cimitière (what in the hell is this phallic thing?) :

From West south west 'The Basilique' :

Close up :

Looking towards Notre Dame :

C'était le temps des cathederalllleeeuuhhhsssss :

Panorama; in the foreground La sorbonne, in the distance the Sacré Coeur :

Close up view:

Rue de Rivoli (a different perspective from the other day with the Louvre and the guidiesque building most visible) :

The ancient hospital 'Les Invalides' :

A tighter shot :

The best for the end ... La veille Dame.

Two shots of the Eiffel tower that i really, really luuuurve - they're for screensavers at work.

From the roof (204m up) with La défense in the background :

The same photo but taken from inside, next to the restaurant, which explains the tinted look :

I just love this kind idea where we see buildings and houses all cramped tightly together and suddenly 'whammo' bang in the middle, we see these beautiful buildings, transplanted from another time ... surreal .. you've gotta have balls to decide one day 'hey, i've got a great idea - what if we stick this huge meccanno set in the middle of every thing ?' ... the rest is history
