Six-Fours
The town is called 'Six-Four-les-Plages'.
It's about 800 kms away from Paris and it takes an all night drive to get there - i've managed to do it once in about seven and a half hours, but generally you're looking at least eight or nine hours in the car.
You could stop off on the way down, at Lyon, say, but as it's the summer holidays there's always the temptation to get the driving done and over with quickly.
It's in a departement called the 'Var', on the côte d'azur, between Marseille and Monaco (about 100 kms away). The region is known for producing, amongst other things, melons (in Cavaillon), rosé wine (in Bandol) and for beautiful landscapes (think of postcards with lavenders and old houses with cats sitting on the doorstep).
Manon des sources, olives, pastis, pétanque, les calanques de Cassis ....
It truly is a beautiful region.
One thing to absolutely do whilst there is to visit 'Le Castellet' - an ancient medieval town, sitting on top of a rocky hill, overlooking on one side the sea, and on the other, the arrière pays with a low mountain range, forests, trees and things which are often the target of arsonists in the summer :-(
Not too far away there is also Grasse, which is famous for it's perfume industry.
There is an excellent book by Patrick Suskind called 'Le Parfum' which is set in 17 century Grasse and is a really good read, considering the subtext : Perfume maker. Going around killing young girls. Trying to capture their essence de vie. Basically.
I used a very old camera - hence the saturation of some of the colours.
A welcome sight after spending all night all night on the road, the first glimpse of the med and the first whiff of fresh sea air - check out how blue the sea is :

Mount Faron - A military installation/listening post which overlooks the bay:
Looking backwards from Mt Faron:
The view from Mt Faron :
Looking towards Marseille:
Looking towards Toulon:
A small secluded bay where i spend a lot of time not thinking about anything and getting sunburned.
On the opposite shore in the distance is Bandol:
